Sidetracked. It's not hard to allow “things” to sidetrack us into doing the unimportant instead of the needed. That's what I've found the last few weeks as I listed so many small toys that I never knew existed onto an eBay store. Because I didn't know the characters let alone the series they came from, I spent hour after hour trying to find hundreds of item's proper names and descriptions.
If you add that to unscheduled other side jobs, before you know it what you really should be doing becomes the last thing you do. Other projects for other people seemed to land on my doorstep and before I knew it I was feeling lethargic and not wanting to complete anything of my own. Not a good place to go.
When I finally waded through the fog in my head this week, I began to get involved in my days as I should. The extra jobs didn't end. The “can you helps” didn't end, but the schedule I set a long time ago came back into play even through I didn't feel like it.
As I sat to list a group of what I knew to be a type of transformer, I was amazed by how moving this leg made something else, moving wings brought another part of it to life and what really astounded me was that someone actually figured this all out.
And then it hit me. “How clever you are God!” Once more he was giving me a lesson from something I was touching and expanding it into a visual for others to see too.
I was only familiar with the cars and trucks that transformed into fighting men. Our boys had had a few of those. But I never examined how intricate each one was, how each turn gave them the ability to become something else. They aren't simple and neither are we and yet somehow many people think, “If I get hypnotized, if I have liposuction, if I have a face-lift, if I loose 50 pounds, if I stop using drugs or stop drinking or smoking....” I think you get the idea. We want to be transformed at the snap of a finger.
Our lives may be a wreak but there are no quick fixes just a lot of maintenance and rethinking. The only instant “fix” is for a person who is dead in his or her trespasses and sin. The one and only fast change is moving from death to life. It's the same person twisted around into a person now alive in Christ.
As I found with the toy, living for Christ also requires tweaking if we are to be changed into the likeness of Christ. Give a child who knows the transformer the toy and he can change it into its other form in no time. Give God your life and he will renew your mind and gently change how you think and how you live.
We were molded and trained in this world to be one thing. Probably nothing will change instantly on the outside of you for others to see. This is a transformation where we allow God to re-mold our minds from within as we practice his plan and see it is good. As we change to do things his way, we move into a true place of maturity in him with each tweak that we allow him to make.
Transformers are usually a form of hard, rigid plastic and if they aren't turned the way they were intended to be, they do break. At first we may feel stiff, resist the transition from what we know to a place where God wants us but he is always gentle, always directing, always with us.
Even if you don't feel like you need to change, you do. We all need to. Why not let someone who has been in the life changing business since the beginning come in and help you? He will not force you into something your not, nor will he make you uncomfortable. He will guide you and help you and teach you to love yourself just as you are no matter what the outside looks like, because he is interested in the inside, the change of heart and the renewing of your mind.
You will learn to focus on the good things and filter all thoughts. You will begin to enjoy the new you who doesn't have to be what others want you to be. And best of all as we see things more clearly, 2 Corinthians 3:18 becomes true.
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
God actually has our complicated lives figured out. Isn't it time to let him change our lives and let him help us from being sidetracked by all of the things that distract us from what really matters... a relationship with the Lord?
How ingenious He is indeed!
